TheadultNancythenadmitstoClydethatthischildhoodhumiliationcausedherunconsciousdesiretostealthebraceletattheparty.AfteraforgivingClydereturnsthebraceletanonymously,heandNancycontinuetheirromanceuntilthenextpartyattheBonners'.SuspectingthattheabsentNancyisspendingtheeveninginBonner'sarms,ClydeleavesthepartytolookforherandseesherexitingMrs.Bonner'sbedroomjustaftertwogunshotsarefired.Bonnerisfoundmurdered,andMrs.Bonner'sdiamondnecklace,stolen.AlthoughNancyandClydearequestioned,valetMyronDexteriseventuallyfoundguiltyandissentencedtodie.Clyde,however,stronglysuspectsNancy,butsheangrilymaintainsherinnocenceandleavesforFlorida. Backinhisoffice,BlairdefendsNancytoClydebutinviteshimtohishousethatevening.Whenconfronted,NancydenieseverythingandtellsBlairthatClydeismerelyjealous.Thenextday,Dexterisexecuted,andaguilt-riddenClydejumpsfromBlair'sofficewindowtohisdeath. Toavoidscandal,BlairandNancymovetoEngland,andafterWorldWarIIbreaksout,Blairvolunteershismedicalservices,whileNancybecomesanambulancedriver.ExpressingconcernoverBlair'shealth,NancyinsiststhattheytakeavacationatLordandLadyWyndham'smanorhouse.Justastheyareleaving,BlairlearnsthatoneofLadyWyndham'svaluablejewelshasbeenstolen.BlairsuspectsNancybutisunabletoproveanythinguntilabombdestroystheirflatandrevealshercacheofstolenjewels.
